Cheap Wholesale Gifts - The Candle - A Gift That Spans The Globe
If you are looking for cheap wholesale gifts that will still offer a value and be appreciated by the recipients, consider giving the gift of a candle.
Candles have been given throughout the world as a sign of hospitality and friendship. Historically, in centuries past, inns in Europe and colonial America would burn candles in the window at night to signify that there was vacancy at the establishment, to light the way to weary travelers, and to welcome them in from the darkness.
To celebrate a birthday, candles have become a part of our traditions. First documented in Germany in the 1700s, birthday candles were lit, one for each year of a child’s life, up until age 16. Each little birthday candle was a celebration of life in the eras before modern medicine.
In Asia, red candles are commonly burned at weddings. The red candle you find at an Asian wedding ceremony are thought to represent happiness, good fortune, and a long life for the newly married couple.
Candles are quite common in western weddings as well. The Unity Candle Ceremony, often part of Christian or a non-denominational wedding, is a lovely and symbolic tradition. Following the exchange of wedding rings, the bride and groom each pick up a burning, white taper candle, and each takes a turn lighting a central pillar candle. This represents each individual extinguishing his or her single life to become a joined, married couple.
Candles are also part of Christmas ceremonies throughout the world, but a particularly lovely candle tradition is observed the Pennsylvania Dutch, who believe that burning a candle on Christmas Day will bring them prosperity and good health throughout the New Year.
Once a Pennsylvania Dutch family lights their Christmas Candle, they let it burn until it burns down and flickers out on its own (normally about 8 hours) – they never extinguish it themselves. They also believe that it must be a candle which was given to them as a gift from a friend or family member; they are normally homemade candles and not store bought.
Most often, the Pennsylvania Dutch gift giver will include the following short poem on a Christmas Candle that they make and give as a gift: “Always burn a candle on Christmas Day. When it is give with love, it will burn bright and clear, and the holiday light shed by the candle foretells happiness lasting all through the year.”
So, when you are considering a gift, remember that a simple little candle can be a gift with a huge impact. The candle is a timeless gift, which has been cherished throughout the centuries, and across all cultures, occasions, and religions. The warmth of a candle imparts a feeling of warmth and appreciation around the globe.
